The Message & The Legacy
In 2013, Alison Salinas was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She was only 32. For Alison, sitting idle while going through treatment was not an option. The lack of information about cervical cancer inspired Alison to begin chronicling her cancer journey on her blog, Tealpower Canuck, which spread quickly through social media. She coined the term, TEALPOWER, as teal represents National Cervical Health Awareness Month in the US, which takes place in January. Alison never intended for TEALPOWER to become a movement, but it did. Her strength, optimism, and determination to beat cancer inspired everyone who loved her and many who did not know her.
Alison was a passionate supporter for the Ride to Conquer Cancer. In 2014, a TEALPOWER team was formed in her honour and in June 2015, the team rode again. At the time, Alison was asked to be the guest speaker and share her story to over 4,000 riders (video above). She spoke about all the possible treatment options that could become available through funded research; what it was like to be cancer-free, only to have it return more aggressively; and how she remained hopeful for the future. That day, Alison's words and incredible spirit brought everyone in attendance together to rally for the cause.
In November 2015, Alison lost her epic battle with cancer. Surrounded by her loving family and friends, the last few weeks of Alison’s life is a testament to who she was. Alison was a lover of life. She lived fiercely, passionately, positively, and gracefully. And always with a smile on her face.
Alison’s goal was to raise awareness about her disease. The mission for awareness and education continues in her memory with an increased emphasis on raising funds for cervical cancer research. Now, the greater TEALPOWER goal is for Canada to officially observe January as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and to ultimately, find a cure.
